Crazy woo-woo sound
Does anyone know the name of the instrument at the very beginning of this song? The one that makes the monkey noise.
Stuff and things.

Matt, it would be helpful to know what lanuage this is, and/or where the music originated. It sounds like a samba beat, probably Portuguese, so I’m guessing Brazil. With those assumptions, I Googled “Brazilian musical instruments” and came up with a good possibility: The Cuica (the “i” should be accented).
Nice song, by the way!

It’s a Cuíca. I only know this because my wife is Brazilian.

Hey you, this is a Brazilian song and the name of the instrument is cuica. Take a look at You Tube. Search for cuica.

No, the others are right, it’s cuíca. Berimbau is this one: http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berimbau_de_peito, quite different, but also Brazilian
.
By the way, this song is called “Sonho meu” (my dream) and the authors are Dona Yvonne Lara and Delcio Carvalho. I don’t know who is singing, though.

I think you could make that noise on a clarinet. (Or at least, it sounds a bit like the weird squeaks I used to make when I was first learning
)

Sonho Meu, I love that song.
Normally that is human sound and you can hear it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vJ7r_yRILEw – in few places during the song.

It’s tuned a bit high for a cuica; they’re usually pitched several octaves lower than that. There’s a good chance it’s actually a buhay, a very similar instrument from the Ukraine which has been picking up popularity in Samba for its similar variant sound.

Buhay:

Mickey Mouse’s early whistling, such as in Steamboat Willie, was a buhay. (Sometimes you’ll see them called b[o|u]chka or berebenytsia.)

Er, sorry. For clarity, the Buhay in that video is what’s making the sort of bird-ish noises.

Hi Matt,
I have no idea what instrument that is, but it is funny. By the way, where did you find that song?
Thanks,
